Although electronic mail has consolidated itself as one if the fundamental pillars of the Information Society, its worldwide use has served as a vehicle for various types of computer attacks. Within the range of email misuses, it is important to highlight the rapid growth of the spam phenomenon. This study analyses the situation, nature and economic and social impact of unsolicited email 'spam'.
It offers an up-to-date diagnosis of the spam problem in its different dimensions (technological, economic, social and legal) in order to identify the possible solutions and propose a series of recommendations for users, the industry and public authorities to address this issue.
